How to overcome the obstacle

There is a fundamental difference in the way the brain and computer process and store information. It is this difference that has long been a serious problem for scientists. Unlike traditional computers that transfer data between processors and memory banks, the human brain combines these functions in one place. The missing link was a corresponding memory cell that could simultaneously perform the functions of a transistor.

The breakthrough occurred after creation synaptic transistorOperating at room temperature and consuming extremely little energy (20 picowatts (pW). The research team explored the field of moire quantum materials, which normally require cryogenic conditions, and successfully demonstrated their innovation at room temperature.

More about the important discovery

  • A synaptic transistor consists of two atomically thick layers (graphene and boron nitride) that overlap each other and are placed with a small offset in the horizontal plane.
  • The magic is in the moiré pattern created by rotating a layer at a certain angle, which causes certain interactions known as magic angles.
  • These angles cause Coulomb interactions between materials, leading to exotic electrical phenomena not seen in ordinary materials.

Scientists continued their work

Researchers have also created neural circuits based on these synaptic transistors and demonstrated their ability to facilitate associative learning. Experimental circuits were trained to recognize groups of binary digits and successfully distinguish patterns such as 000 and 111 from 101.

These results have profound implications, as noted in the abstract of the paper published in the journal Nature: “The moiré synaptic transistor provides efficient circuits for memory computation and [обіцяє] advanced hardware accelerators for artificial intelligence and machine learning”.

This revolutionary development could be a crucial step towards realizing the convergence of biological and electronic systems and could offer new possibilities for the future of advanced hardware in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
