Located in West Antarctica, Thwaites Glacier is roughly the size of parts of Ukraine. Its melting poses a significant threat because it contains enough water to raise sea levels by more than half a meter if it collapsed completely.

Concerned about the inadequacy of current measures to combat global warming, researchers led by John Moore from the University of Lapland in Finland are investigating this unconventional approach.

Why is the glacier melting?

The main reason for the melting of the glacier is the warming of the ocean currents that constantly hit it. To solve this problem, Moore previously proposed building a wall in the Amundsen Sea that would deflect these warm currents. Recently, however, preference has been given to the installation of “seafloor anchor bulkheads”, which are considered potentially more cost-effective and reversible in case of unforeseen consequences.

Although the research is still in its early stages, Moore and his team are making significant progress. They have developed a one-meter-tall prototype curtain that has been tested in water tanks, and they plan to raise it to a height of 10 meters to test it in a Norwegian fjord within two years.

Critics argue that such measures are temporary solutions that divert attention from the fundamental problem of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the logistical difficulties associated with the implementation of such a huge project are also quite significant.

But Moore emphasizes the urgency of action, arguing that emissions reduction efforts may not be enough to save Thwaites Glacier. Its destruction may be inevitable as large cracks appear in the ice sheet.

Although the proposal has been met with skepticism, Moore and his team are determined to explore all ways to protect this critically important ice sheet. The future of the Thwaites Glacier is at stake, and with it the fate of coastal areas around the world.
