Such a significant deviation from the trends predicted based on historical data forced experts to look for answers because Previously mathematical models predicted a record warm year was not expected.

unexpected temperature

Despite emerging from a three-year La Niña period in the tropical Pacific, a phenomenon often associated with cooling, initial forecasts gave only a one-in-five chance that 2023 would be a record warm year.

But the surprise began to manifest itself in March, when the temperature of the sea surface in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean increased significantly. By June the sea ice area around Antarctica lowest level in the entire observation historyIt is losing an area equivalent to the size of Alaska compared to average coverage between 1981 and 2010.

So what went wrong?

Various theories have been proposed to explain this anomaly, including the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, the eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Hapai volcano in January 2022, and changes in shipping regulations mandating the use of cleaner fuels. However, none of these factors alone explains the observed deviation in temperatures.

Efforts are currently being made to improve data collection systems, in particular: NASA PACE missionThe research, launched in February, aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of atmospheric aerosol particles. Although these advances promise to reduce uncertainties in climate models, they may not fully explain the complexity of the 2023 temperature anomaly.

The unprecedented nature of the 2023 temperature anomaly has surprised the scientific community and questioned the reliability of statistical predictions based on historical data. If the anomaly continues after August, this may give a signal. Fundamental changes in Earth’s climate systemcreating challenges for future climate projections and climate change adaptation efforts.

NVIDIA can help

Recently, the company NVIDIA announced that it has made a digital model of the Earth that will help simulate and therefore predict climate change. This could become a groundbreaking tool in the hands of scientists to help understand what the future holds for humanity.
