Unfortunately, more than half of this type of waste cannot be noticed in any way. They have no recognizable design or label and can come from any country.

Detail

It was determined that 24 percent of the plastic material examined belonged to five companies:

  • Soft drink manufacturers Coca Cola And PepsiCo are responsible for 11 and 5 percent, respectively.
  • They are followed by the transnational giants of the food industry Nestlé And Danone
  • One of the world’s largest tobacco products manufacturers ranks in the top five Altria.

More accountability is needed to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution, researchers say. But even the positive actions of just these few large multinational companies can have a significant impact on reducing the rate of pollution on the planet.

Phasing out the biggest polluters of single-use and short-lived plastic products will significantly reduce global plastic pollution.

Researchers suggest that Encourage food and drink companies to do more to reduce plastic waste, they produce. Efforts can be made to reduce plastic use, improve waste management systems, change product design and increase recyclability. There are important steps that can be taken.

As for the large amounts of unbranded plastic that cannot be attributed to individual companies, researchers are calling for international standards and common databases to track this waste more effectively. As with most problems, the better we understand the problem, the better we can solve it.

Meanwhile, scientists continue to look for ways to produce plastics that are more biodegradable and do not persist in the environment for long. This problem is becoming increasingly urgent, considering that plastic production has doubled in the last two decades. Other scientists are trying to find ways to destroy existing plastic. For example, I am considering various options for fungi and bacteria that will decompose plastic. There are already many of them, but they all have certain shortcomings and cannot be scaled yet.
