This innovation is an important step towards creating an artificial brain capable of performing calculations similar to human mental processes. This artificial synapse is quite similar to its biological counterpart, especially in that it uses water and mineral ions in its operation.

More about the study

In their experiments, the scientists used an aqueous solution of potassium chloride, reflecting the role of calcium ions in natural synapses. This discovery could be an important step in the development of AI that potentially surpasses digital platforms by offering simplicity and energy efficiency while perfectly executing AI algorithms.

On the basis of this success iontronic memory deviceas researchers say. This prototype, measuring 150×200 microns, works as a cone-like ion channel filled with aqueous potassium chloride solution. Under the influence of an electric current, ions move along the channel, changing its bulk density and conductivity.

The researchers observed that the conductance of the memristor changed in response to the intensity and duration of electrical pulses, simulating dynamic connections between neurons at synapses.

This functionality is very similar to the transmission of neural signals through brain networks, opening up potential applications in algorithm execution or “thought generation.”

Additionally, the ability to create channels of different lengths paves the way for the development of various computing elements.

The development of this artificial synapse opens promising avenues for further research and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence. As scientists investigate this technology more deeply, the possibilities for revolutionary discoveries and practical applications continue to expand.
