The study explores the aftermath of Earth’s massive collision with a Mars-sized celestial body known as Theia in about 2000. 4.5 billion years ago. This catastrophic event not only led to the formation of the Moon, but may also have left mysterious “clots” hidden deep within the Earth.

What kind of clots?

Believed to be the remnants of an ancient impact, these mysterious formations are currently under scrutiny by scientists investigating their potential role in shaping geological processes on Earth.

These clots may have played a crucial role in initiating plate tectonics, the underlying mechanism that causes earthquakes and volcanic activity, according to study co-author Qian Yuan of the Cal Institute of Technology.

The study suggests that these hidden clusters trigger mantle plumes, which in turn activate a process called “mantling.” through loss.

What is loss?

This is the process by which some parts of the Earth’s crust sink beneath others. Scientists believe this could play an important role in creating the conditions for life to thrive on our planet billions of years from now.

But not all experts are convinced by the study’s results. Some question the difficulty of reconstructing events that occurred over such a long period of time. University of Maryland geologist Michael Brown points out the limitations in our understanding of Earth’s early history, highlighting the philosophical complexities of unraveling the mysteries of the distant past.
