The first space balloon of its kind made a successful landing in Florida. Space tourism company Space Perspective completed the second unmanned test flight of the vehicle called Spaceship Neptune on Sunday. During this test, the capsule carried by the balloon made a six-hour journey to the stratosphere and then managed to land in the ocean by making a controlled descent. After landing, the capsule was retrieved from the water using a boat and crane.
A space balloon trip costs ‘only’ $125,000
The Neptune spacecraft was built with the goal of rising approximately 32 kilometers above Earth and providing a unique panoramic view of the planet. This experience was offered for $125,000It promises passengers not only a great view, but also extra comfort such as a cocktail menu, music list and reclining seats. The balloon can be as big as the Eiffel Tower when fully inflated and rises at a very low speed during launch.
Travel to space with a space balloon will begin in 2026
The company’s ultimate goal is to begin manned flights in 2025 and transition to commercial operations by 2026. Taber MacCallum, founder and CTO of Space Perspective This latest test flight is an important step for the company. He stated that this was so. The test flight was carried out from the deck of the MS Voyager in the Gulf of Mexico. During this process, the capsule’s pressure and equilibrium were successfully maintained at the highest altitude.
Space Perspective stated that the data gathered during this flight test was crucial to the development of manned test flights. The space bubble concept had managed to raise $100 million from investors to support its vision of creating the world’s first “space lounge.” Although manned flights have not yet begun, the company has has already sold more than 1,800 tickets.
The Neptune spacecraft will be able to carry eight people at a time to the threshold of space. Two hours of the six-hour flight will be spent in the stratosphere, allowing passengers to observe the curvature of the Earth, the thin blue line of the atmosphere and the darkness of space. It is predicted that the Neptune spacecraft will give a new breath of life to space tourism if it passes all tests and begins commercial operations.
