According to Bloomberg, Turkish political officials are in talks with Somalia about establishing a missile and space rocket test facility in the Horn of Africa. According to sources close to the matter, long-range tests are required for Turkey’s ballistic missile program and Somalia’s strategic location overlooking the Indian Ocean is well-suited for such tests.
In addition, Somalia’s location near the equator has the potential to increase the range and efficiency of space rockets. Therefore, these plans Turkey can accelerate its space project goals is considered.
Somalia has a suitable geographic location for missile tests
Officials from the Turkish space agency are trying to fill the gap with new projects, while they claim that this has long been in the background compared to global space studies. So much so that one of the biggest plans is for Turkey to be able to launch its own rockets The biggest decision mechanism for Somalia’s participation in this project is Somalia’s geographical location.. Of course, neither Turkish nor Somali officials have made any statement on the matter.
As you may recall, President Erdoğan previously announced his intention to extend the range of domestic Typhoon missiles. Establishing a launch site in Somalia would allow for safer missile tests, reducing the risk of debris falling into populated areas. Strong relations with Somalia could become increasingly important, especially in military and infrastructure projects.
While Turkey has provided military training and aid to Somalia in recent years, also focuses on hydrocarbon exploration. Turkey already has one of the largest military bases in Somalia and has been training the country’s security forces for some time. Now it may be possible to take another step forward in its space program with the new space base that will be established in Somalia.
