The Las Nieves campsite in Biescas suffered the worst natural disaster in Spain’s recent history until the arrival of DANA from Valencia. A huge wave passed through the Arras valley and completely swept away the campsite of approximately 600 people. It was in 1996 and there were 87 deaths.
Catalonia is concerned about campsites. The problem was that this campground was in a flood zone. Now a new DANA is approaching Catalonia and the autonomous community is focused squarely on the campsites.
The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, explained in an interview that there were many campsites in flood-prone areas, which was “alarming”. “We need to review this, the order is complete,” says Illa.
Dozens of camping areas are at risk There are different reports about the risks of Catalan campsites. According to El Periódico, there are more than 40 campsites in flood-prone areas. A report prepared by the Generalitat details the situation of 143 campsites at risk. According to El País, 42.7% of Catalan campsites are located in flood-prone areas, representing 151 out of more than 350 sites in total.
There is no need to create unnecessary alarms. In his interview with the Minister of Labor and Employment, Miquel Gotanegra, President of the Catalan Camping Federation, pointed out that the situation was not that worrying and asked for the x-ray of the camping areas to be “updated”.
The Federation regrets that an “unnecessary alarm” has been raised and states that they are the “first party concerned” in guaranteeing the overall safety of the campsites. “We do not share because the problem focuses on the camping sector at a time when flood risks affect many regions in the country,” says Gotanegra.
They have been working on Self Protection Plans for years. The camping sector states that it has been in contact with the Administration to seek solutions since 2015, and has been working to prepare Self-Protection Plans against possible problems since 2018.
However, these plans have not yet been approved by the Generalitat. The current situation serves to accelerate this work.
