Some researchers claim to have created a kind of infinite laser. Since it is not powered by light like conventional lasers, this laser can last forever.

The find was published in a magazine natureearlier this month, and the researchers believe it is possible to extract the energy that will power this laser from a special phase of matter.

In recent decades, technology-related research has developed at an alarming rate. And laser-related research has been part of that progress, especially those that have led to advances in computers, where lasers are an integral part of evolution. But a laser that will theoretically last forever is unprecedented and amazing.

Is an infinite laser possible?

In a paper published in the journal Nature, the researchers explained that the infinite laser is created by a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) because it is a special phase of matter in which atoms coalesce into a single cloudy mass. By manipulating atoms directly and using the principles of quantum mechanics, they were able to make them behave like restrained waves. In this way, the mass acts as a single body, allowing researchers to take advantage of the special properties of the atoms in the BEC.

But all this was not as easy as it seems. To achieve the desired result, some steps had to be performed with the utmost attention and caution.

First, the researchers formed the BEC. After that, they created a large “reservoir” for the BEC to extract new atoms. This tank was constantly charged with strontium atoms. The BEC itself is located inside the tank, and the constant use of lasers was necessary to cool the tank. Thus, it was possible to keep things replenished and constantly cooled at the same time.

Ultimately, this allowed the laser to work consistently, with a more thoughtful design and a more natural process.

Undoubtedly, there will be innovations and improvements in the future. But with this first and important step, it became possible to demonstrate that an infinite laser is possible. Soon, research, new tests, and laser implementations will become more common.
