The award ceremony took place on 5 July during the International Congress of Mathematics in Helsinki. Vyazovska became the second woman to receive a medal in the history of the award. The scientist managed to solve a problem that scientists from all over the world have been fighting for centuries.

The Fields medal for the mathematician is already the ninth international award.

Maryna Vyazovska proved that the E₈ lattice is the most dense way of packing identical spheres in eight dimensions. In addition, the mathematician contributed to the solution of interpolation problems in Fourier analysis, as well as related problems.

Maryna Vyazovska noted that the Fields medal was awarded to young mathematicians to encourage them to work harder.

Ukrainian stressed: mathematics is always a challenge.

I don’t really believe that talent exists. For me, talent is more about attention. Not that you can breathe underwater, for example. That is, not some abilities that other people do not have. More curiosity about something and the opportunity to do it for a long time,
said Vyazovska.

He added that a person can do something for a long period of time, the skill is acquired by practice. That’s why interest comes first.

What is known about Maryna Vyazovska

Currently, the scientist works in the Department of Number Theory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. In 2016, Vyazovska received the Salem Prize and the following year the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize.

The mathematician became one of the heroes of the project “Science it”.
