OUR international space station (International Station Space) published this Sunday (17) photos of three major Brazilian cities: the capitals of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba.
The photos were taken on July 4 by ISS agents and released earlier this week.
In recent days, the scientific field has been in the spotlight, especially in regards to images. Recently, one of the most discussed topics on social networks has been images published by NASA taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope, which cost about $10 billion to design, is designed to capture color images of the universe and expand our knowledge of the cosmos. Some of the pictures already taken are beautiful and give us more data on the South Rim Nebula, the Carina Nebula, and Stefan’s Quintet.
But even here, on Earth, there is beauty, even in the buildings erected by mankind. Below you can see photos taken from the three Brazilian capitals.

The pictures were taken by the International Space Station as it orbited our planet at an altitude of about 420 km above the earth. These images are part of the Cities at Night project, which aims to quantify, map, and monitor pollution from artificial lighting. Millions of pictures have already been taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station, but most of them are uncatalogued and therefore impossible to assign to a specific location. This project aims to change this situation through what they call “citizen science” by locating photographs and through this cataloging, in order to be able to contribute to artificial light pollution research.
Such joint work is possible only due to the interest of civil society in issues related to science and technology exchange between large organizations and countries. The International Space Station itself, which made this project possible, operates through an alliance of five space agencies and has already implemented more than three thousand projects at its facilities.
