Construction of Nant de Drance began in 2008. In the process of work, the developer went through more than 17 kilometers of tunnels, investing more than $ 2 billion in the creation of the power plant. Vieux Emosson’s upper reservoir holds 25 million cubic meters of water, corresponding to a 20 million kWh storage capacity. The builders had to raise the initial height of the complex by 21.5 meters to double its capacity.

Currently, the system includes six underground turbines located at a depth of 600 meters. The capacity of each facility is 150 MW. These turbines operate in several modes and switch between them in 5-10 minutes. passes through them 360 cubic meters of water per second. When too much electricity is detected in the network, water is pumped from the lower chamber to the upper chamber, where it is stored for the future.

“Water battery” app

It is assumed that the filled warehouse could supply electricity to more than 900,000 homes in Switzerland and neighboring European countries. Nant de Drance SA noted that during the development of the project, special attention was paid to the environmental friendliness of the structure – the system works with zero emissions and practically does not affect the surrounding flora and fauna.

One of Nant de Drance’s priorities is to reduce the impact on the environment as much as possible. 15 projects with a total cost of CHF 22 million were implemented to offset the impact of the hydroelectric power plant and the high-voltage lines connecting the power plant to the grid,

The station will be managed by the same company, Nant de Drance SA, with the participation of an advisory group represented by WWF, Pro Natura, state regulators and the Swiss Federal Energy Authority. The partners plan to hold an official event for commissioning the plant in September of this year.
