Research conducted Department of Integrative Biology gives Oregon State University have shown that excessive exposure to light from mobile phones accelerates aging. The study showed that the same goes for the screens of other devices such as TVs and laptops.
To confirm the experiment, scientists used flies. They were exposed to a lot of light, which caused a shift in their metabolic rate. As a result, they died earlier than other flies used in the experiment.
“There are growing concerns that prolonged exposure to artificial light, especially blue-light LEDs, can be harmful to human health. model organisms should warn us of possible cell damage,” said lead scientist Dr. Yadviga Gibultovich.
How the tests were carried out
To understand the implications and conduct research, the scientists studied the survival rate of flies kept in darkness and then in a place receiving constant light. This control occurred with the gradual transfer of insects.
Thus, they went from dark to light at 2, 20, 40 and 60 days of age. The blue light emitted by the screens affected the mitochondria of the cells. These mitochondria are responsible for the work of a kind of power plant that produces ATP.

“A novel aspect of this study shows that chronic exposure to blue light can disrupt energy production pathways even in cells that are not specialized to detect light,” Gibultovich said after the study’s findings were published.
While the results show just how badly the flies were affected, it is important to note that there is a big difference between the amount of light emitted during the tests and the lower levels typically consumed by mobile phones in daily life.
However, the scientist pointed out that this is a precautionary measure to take if you do not want to age faster due to these light sources: “Our study shows that avoiding excessive exposure to blue light may be a good anti-aging strategy.”
