How does it work

The new technology is system based. MOST – Molecular storage system of solar energy developed by Swedish scientists. Its main component is a specially designed molecule of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. When it comes into contact with sunlight, it changes shape and becomes an isomer – a molecule made up of the same atoms but with a different structure.

The isomers can be stored in liquid form for further use, for example at night or during the winter months. In this case, the scientists modified the system so that the energy 18 years can be stored. If necessary, a specially designed catalyst releases it in the form of heat, returning the molecule to its original form. You can use it again later.

This is a radically new way of generating electricity from solar energy. This means we can now use solar energy to generate electricity, regardless of weather, time, year or geographic location. This is a closed system that can operate without the emission of carbon dioxide,
lead researcher Casper Mott-Polsen of Chalmers University of Technology.

The role of the generator is an ultra-thin microchip that can be integrated into electronic devices:

  • headphone,
  • watches,
  • phones.

It produces little energy so far, but the test results look promising.
