The treasure was found during archaeological work at a Viking Age settlement. This area has been inhabited by humans for several hundred years.

What did they find?

  • Archaeologists have discovered more than 20 buildings, the oldest of which date back to 400 AD.
  • The main number of finds is from the Viking period (800-1050 AD) and the early Middle Ages.
  • The treasure was buried under the remains of the wooden floor of the building. The coins were kept in a linen bag placed inside a small ceramic pot along with the jewellery.

In total, eight high-quality neck rings (hryvnia) were discovered that were extremely well preserved despite the fact that they were made almost a thousand years ago.
– commented Maria Lingström from the team of archaeologists.

In addition to neck rings, two arm rings, a finger ring, two pearls and 12 coins used as ornaments were found in the ceramic bowl. It is unclear at this time why residents decide to keep their most prized possessions, but it is usually done in times of disaster.

A few coins were brought from England, Bohemia and Bavaria. It is a great example of the long-distance connections and flourishing trade of the Viking Age. Five Arab dirhams were also found in the treasury. One of the European coins is extremely rare: it was minted in Rouen, France, and dates from about the 10th century.
