What are leap seconds?

Adding the extra seconds is sometimes done to account for the gradual slowing of Earth’s rotation and has been a headache for many tech companies over the years.

• Spring time was introduced in 1972 as a way to set Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) approximately every 21 months.
• Because these seconds are irregular and difficult to predict due to Earth’s varying rotational speed, they can disrupt systems that require accurate timekeeping.
• In early 2022, Meta published a blog post calling for edge-to-bounce, noting that Reddit was down for nearly 40 minutes in 2012 when a new leap second intervened on the company’s servers.
• In 2017, Cloudflare blamed time for the DNS service being cut off at exactly midnight GMT on New Year’s Eve.

According to The New York Times, member states of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures voted almost unanimously to support Resolution D at a meeting in Versailles, France, on Friday, November 18. Resolution D requires UTC Continuous with leap seconds from 2035 to at least 2135while scientists hope to develop a better system for keeping atomic and astronomical time scales in sync.
