In last year’s forecast Director of the Space Research Institute Gavin Schmidt predicted that 2022 would be slightly warmer than 2021, and it did. Now on the hottest list, 2015 is the year that crosses borders.

Results

  • 2022 in the European ECMWF Copernicus dataset and the Berkeley Earth dataset, fifth among all measured periods, It begins in the late 1800s.
  • According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Great Britain Met Office, it ranks 6th due to the small difference in the aforementioned measurements.
  • NASA’s dataset also placed 2022 in fifth place, almost equating it with 2015.
  • Total thermal energy in the ocean hit a new record this year: 90 percent of all the heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions went to the oceans.

There are two reasons for this. First of all, one factor is the trend of global warming caused by human activity. The second is the slow oscillation of La Niña and El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. This movement of surface water accounts for a significant portion of the annual variation in mean surface temperature.

Berkeley Earth states that this year was the warmest year on record for 8.5 percent of Earth’s land area, home to nearly 850 million people. For example, this year’s Western European heat was part of the hottest summer ever. Damaged by extreme spring heat and severe flooding, Pakistan did not set a new annual temperature record, but neighboring Afghanistan did.

In the United States, 2022 was the 18th warmest year on record. There were 18 weather events worth over $1 billion, making it the third-worst total since 1980.
