A team of seismologists from the Australian National University has discovered a new inner layer in the Earth’s core.. The layer has a diameter of 650 km and consists of dense iron. Prior to this discovery, scientists believed that the deepest layer of the core would have a radius of about 1227 km.

Scientists have discovered a never-before-seen section of the Earth’s core

Using information from more than 200 aftershocks greater than 6 degrees over the past decade, a team of seismologists from the Australian National University has determined the unusual behavior of seismic waves that have reached the deepest layers of the earth’s core.

Thanks to the innovative method, the Thanh Son Fom team found five arrivals and departures of seismic waves between the source and antipode, in contrast to previous studies in which only one bounce was recorded. To do this, the researchers analyzed more than 200 high-magnitude earthquakes over the past decade.

To help understand the Earth’s core, many scholars use the comparison to an onion, with overlapping layers. Each layer is denser and smaller than the previous one until you reach the core, which is considered the heart of the planet.

The development of technology contributed to the discovery of scientists

Using the analysis of seismic waves, scientists have discovered previously unseen areas of the Earth’s core. This new information, obtained through modern technology, is a significant contribution to the understanding of the planet.

The discovery of this new structure in the Earth’s core can be explained by a change in the growth of the inner core in the past. Scientists are studying this possibility to better understand how this change happened and why it happened..

The Earth’s core is responsible for several phenomena that directly affect the planet’s surface, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The study of the properties of this core is necessary to understand these events and prevent natural disasters.

The function of the magnetic field maintained by the Earth’s core is necessary to sustain life and the atmosphere. Any change in this structure can have serious and irreversible consequences for the planet. Thus, it is necessary that new research in this area be continued.
