A meteorite hit south Texas last week. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) estimated the mass of the celestial object at half a ton. The object, which has not yet been identified, fell near the town of McAllen, near the border with Mexico.
Despite the fact that it broke into several pieces upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere, the meteorite impact caused concern among the local population and went viral on social media. CCTV footage posted to Twitter shows the facility collapsing near McAllen, Texas, causing a loud bang. There were no reports of injuries.
According to NASA, the meteorite that fell in the city of Texas was moving at a speed of 43,000 km/h. The impact happened last Wednesday (February 15) and produced the equivalent of eight tons of TNT, according to the Johnson Space Center. The object collapsed at an altitude of 33 km without causing damage.
Although they can cause curiosity and even panic, meteorite impacts usually don’t pose a serious danger to the public, according to NASA. Objects cool rapidly after entering the Earth’s atmosphere and usually cause no harm. NASA also clarified that it is not responsible for the safety of meteorites in storage at US scientific institutions.
“The meteor seen in McAllen’s sky is a reminder of the need for NASA and others to deepen our understanding and protection of the Earth, combine science and engineering to advance space exploration, integrate ground and planetary exploration to expand our understanding of the solar system, and advance space missions with risk reduction,” NASA said.
Analyzing the angle and speed of reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, experts have determined the nature of the object that crashed near McAllen, Texas. While meteorites can be spectacular, they usually slow down and disintegrate before they reach the planet’s surface without posing a significant danger.
