What scientists discovered about new cats
Genetic analysis revealed that Corsican wildcats are not relatives of forest cats or wild descendants of domestic cats, but unique genetic line, its exact taxonomic status and origin have not yet been determined. Thanks to their solid size – up to 90 centimeters from head to tail, thick silky fur and black tip of the tail – it is easy to distinguish feral cats from other felines.
Now that the Corsican cats are considered a separate species, the researchers plan to study the distribution and behavior of the cats in more detail. They also plan to collect additional samples for research and have attached GPS collars to the captured animals to track their movements.
