Gravitational waves are usually extremely weak. To detect gravitational waves traveling through the Earth, it was necessary to make detectors that could measure oscillations smaller than the width of an atomic nucleus. However, researchers note that in the very early stages of the universe, these gravitational waves can be very strong. Where they were strongest, waves could provide an extraordinary amount of energy.

The study’s authors calculated that this could have serious consequences for the electromagnetic field that existed at that time in the early universe. Regions of intense gravity can excite the electromagnetic field enough to create light by releasing some of its energy as radiation.

This result leads to a completely new phenomenon: light is produced solely by gravity. There’s no way this could happen in the modern universe, but physicists have shown that the early universe is a much stranger place than you might imagine.
