The ocean is warming

Ocean surface temperatures hit an all-time high this month, breaking all records since satellite measurements began in the 1980s. in the first days of April average global temperature reached 21.1 degrees Celsius. The previous record of 21 degrees was broken in March 2016.

The new record is the result of heat buildup from climate change in the eastern Pacific that lasted three years but was no longer mitigated by La Niña, a natural ocean cycle of low surface temperatures that ended in March.

La Niña is now over and the tropical Pacific Ocean, a vast ocean, is warming.
— oceanographer Michael McFadden explains.

According to McFadyen, the background trend on the surface of the ocean, land and atmosphere is warming. As greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere, all three environments get warmer. But these trends fluctuate somewhat due to the La Niña and El Niño cycles (warming of the ocean surface).

  • Actually though GHG concentration in 2022 was highest On record, and the planet experienced devastating heat waves, it wasn’t exactly the warmest year on record in terms of global ocean surface temperature due to La Niña (cooling).
  • in return 2016 was the hottest year on record for ocean observationsbecause there was high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere plus a strong El Niño (warming).
  • Now A similar combination awaits us in the coming years. – The global temperature of the Earth’s surface and ocean will most likely reach a new record level. Now, when the Pacific Ocean is neutral (the transition from La Niña to El Niño), if we see a temperature of 21.1 degrees Celsius, then by the end of 2023 or a little later in 2024, the situation will likely get worse when that transition is complete.
