A brain activity decoder presented by the researchers can read a person’s thoughts without the need for invasive devices such as implants. The technology was developed for patients who are conscious but unable to speak for any reason.

How is everything working?

AI analyzes brain activity by measuring it with an fMRI scanner and converts the received signals into text. While the reproduced text is not a literal translation of what a person has heard or said about himself, technology is very good at conveying the gist of his thoughts. In about half of the cases, AI completely decodes human expressions.

However, the technology still has its limitations.

  • For example, in order for the patient to decipher his thoughts correctly, he must first teach the algorithm.
  • In addition, the use of the method is limited by the need for fMRI, but simpler imaging options are being studied.

Despite these limitations, the researchers assure you that you don’t have to worry about AI abuse, for example, in cases of torture or espionage. During the experiments, if a person deliberately tried to confuse the AI and think of something else, the decoding results were chaotic. In addition, according to the authors, the technology is still in the early stages of development and regulatory initiatives are crucial.

Why are industry experts worried about this technology?

However, experts’ fears are justified. If big IT companies learn to read people’s minds, the development of neurotechnology could have serious consequences. Nita Farahani, professor of biological sciences, explains very soon that our thoughts may not be just our own.

Overall, this new system represents a significant leap forward in non-invasive methods for understanding human mental processes. However, it is important to proceed with caution and ensure that this technology is used ethically and responsibly.
