Apple Watch’s fall detection saves two lives

The Apple Watch’s health features made headlines this month and were reputed to have saved at least two lives. The fall detection system worked in two emergencies in Minnesota and Ohio. In Minnesota, Apple Watch user Michael Brodkorb was hit by a car and then fled the scene. His Apple Watch detected the impact with drop detection, and when he couldn’t answer, he called 911. “I was just shocked,” he said. “I mean, just the force of a car crash.”

Along with the 911 call, fall detection alerted his wife and children at home so he could get help right away. It resulted in injuries to his ribs and tailbone. “It’s definitely a life-saving tool,” Brodkorb said. Police found the driver, a 17-year-old male, but it is not yet known whether he will be charged.

During his recovery, Brodkorb emailed Apple CEO Tim Cook wishing him a speedy recovery. In Cincinnati, 83-year-old William Fryer was walking along the Ohio River Trail with his knees bent. No one was around, but when her Apple Watch saw the fall, she called 911 and warned her daughter.

Cincinnati police were able to locate her, and paramedics took her to the hospital. X-rays revealed that it was a large blood clot that eventually caused it to fall off, but the symptoms of the blood clot were atypical as it went unnoticed. Fryer removed the blood clot and said he was grateful his Apple Watch was able to summon help.

You can enable fall detection on your Apple Watch by opening the Apple Watch app for iPhone, going to Emergency, and turning on fall detection. Fall detection is enabled by default for Apple Watch owners over 55, but younger Apple Watch users can also enable it.
