A few days ago, we published an analysis of the Corsair MP700, a high-performance PCIe Gen5 compatible SSD, which, as we told you in the said analysis, comes without a reference cooling system, because too loud and because it also requires a SATA connector to work.

In the said analysis I also explained to you that this storage drive it needs a cooling system to run smoothly, that it can be passive and that it is not a problem because all motherboards on the market today have a radiator in their main M.2 slot, which means they have a passive dissipation system.

PCIe Gen5 drives are very fast, but generate more heat and cannot be used without a cooling system. This was no secret, it is something we have known since the introduction of the first units of this type, but the fact is that some media created a story based on TechPowerUp’s analysis, where they decided to test the Corsair MP700 without any distraction.

From there, the interpretations I’ve seen are more than questionable, especially considering some come from niche media. TechPowerUp tested the unit without distraction to expand on its results and offer a more complete and show the user what can happen if this SSD is used against the manufacturer’s instructions.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean PCIe Gen5 drives have problems or need hardware upgrades or revisions. Even Phison herself was clear in this regard from the first minuteand said that the next generation of SSDs compatible with this standard will need an additional cooler, either active, which is the noisy reference cooler we all know, or passive, which motherboards offer.

No news by the component which clearly indicating that he needs a distraction when used without such dissipation, it heats up and shuts down for safety reasons to prevent irreversible damage. However, it is interesting what TechPowerUp did when they dared to show us the consequences of using a PCIe Gen5 SSD without a cooler.
