Google’s new search engine helps identify AI-generated images

Google has announced a new tool for its About This Image search engine. New help users determine if the image they are viewing was created by artificial intelligence. According to the company, the tool will help determine whether content is credible or not. The tool will be available first in the United States and later rolled out to other regions.

In a post on the official blog, Google commented the following: “You see an image on a website, in your feed, or in a friend’s post, and you think, “This doesn’t look quite right.” Is the image displayed in the correct context? Was it manipulation or forgery? Where does it come from?With the “About this image” tool, the user will be able to easily determine if any generative AI is responsible for creating a photo. This tool is one of the novelties of Google presented at I/The 2023.

How this image works

According to Google, all AI-generated company images will be automatically identified. However, this does not guarantee that the tool will actually identify fake photos created by other generative AIs. As you can see in the image below, the image created by Google AI will have the tag “Image is automatically tagged as generated by AI”.

The same should not happen automatically with images created by other AIs. The user will need to use the “About This Image” tool to ensure that the photo is being created using artificial intelligence. To do this, simply follow these steps:

  • Search for any image in a search engine;
  • Select the option with three dots in the upper right corner;
  • select the “About this image” option;
  • Wait for Google to determine the origin of the photo.

Among the information disclosed by the tool will be when the image was first indexed on the platform, where it may have first appeared, whether it is real or AI-generated, and on which site the image received the most views. In this way, the user will be able to determine the origin and origin of the image, having more information if what he sees is reliable and real. The novelty is interesting in that it demonstrates the company’s step towards simplifying the identification of AI products in a world in which artificial intelligence is more and more present. We emphasize again that For now, it will only be available in the US..
