Communication security in mobile networks: JRS told the nuances

Communication in the networks of Ukrainian mobile operators is safe for subscribers.

According to Ukrinform, the Center for Combating Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council announced it on Facebook.

Regarding the dissemination of information on May 4 about the possibility of Russian invaders eavesdropping on the conversations of subscribers of Ukrainian mobile operators, the JRS asked mobile operators for clarification.

Therefore, according to Kyivstar’s press service, the information circulated is not correct.

It is stated that base stations in temporarily occupied areas operate normally if they are not damaged or de-energized.

The base station equipment as a signal repeater does not contain any information about subscribers’ calls or personal data on the base station, but this data is on the subscriber’s phone.

In this regard, if the subscriber is in the occupied territory, contacts, search history on the Internet, social media accounts, mobile banking applications, it is recommended to delete the photo from the phone.

The information is stored on the core equipment of the network located in a protected area.

Yes, at any moment, at the slightest threat, the switches can be remotely turned off by the telecom operator.

Center for Combating Disinformation, “This means that information about the number is securely protected. Therefore, communication in the networks of Ukrainian mobile operators is safe for subscribers.”

An example is the situation with the restoration of Ukrainian communications in the Kherson region after its disconnection. At that time, access to corporate networks and equipment of operators in the temporarily occupied territories was closed, and all access passwords were changed.

JRS explained that the traffic is transmitted in encrypted form. Data transfer between subscribers’ phones and base stations is encrypted, making eavesdropping impossible.

In addition, operators use modern encryption systems recommended by international organizations that develop standards for mobile communications and networking.

“No outside access to the network is possible. Access to external ports of base station equipment, networking and switching equipment is denied,” JRS said.

It is noted that operators monitor illegal connection to the network. Control of network equipment works in operators’ networks.

Thus, any inclusion in the network of operators for eavesdropping (so-called duplication of packets) will be noticed immediately.

Access to the phones and computers of Ukrainians is one of the areas of enemy attack, according to Yuriy Shchyhol, head of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, as reported by Ukrinform.
