Facebook tackles ‘indiscreet invites’ problem

You must remember it because it was only a few days ago We told you about the latest (for now) Facebook failure, an issue that meant that visits to other people’s profiles were automatically converted to friend requests. As I mentioned at the time, one of the features that many users of this social network appreciate the most is that it was impossible to find out if someone had visited your profile, and therefore no one could know that you had visited theirs.

It is true that when we think about it, it has both positive and negative sides. The positive, of course, is that it protects users’ privacy and their movement on the social network. This, of course, also strengthens the use of Facebook, because those responsible for it are very well aware from the beginning that if the steps of users through other people’s profiles were traceable, the use of their network would be more than significantly reduced, which in turn would be transmitted so they could provide much less monetizable content. In other words, they care about privacy, yes, but also about their own interests.

The bad thing is, of course, it makes it a lot easier persecution, although we have to consider two factors when judging this. It’s the first one Facebook offers a number of controls that allow you to fine-tune what other users see and what they don’t, depending on whether they are strangers, contacts, whether they are part of a trusted group, etc. And the second, even more important, is that we must not forget that we are talking about a social network, that is, a type of service in which the scope of privacy is, to put it politely, limited.

But the problem is that the privacy about visiting other people’s profiles worked well so users trusted it. Now, as we can read on Engadget, Facebook has already fixed this and no more friend requests will be sent to visited profiles, meaning that the service is fortunately back to normal. In addition, Meta apologized for the problems caused, how could it be otherwise.

However, the constant series of technical problems of the social network have added to the poor future prospects in this regard, considering that Meta has undertaken a massive layoff that isn’t over yet, is all the more reason (and the list is already quite long) to have all the reservations in the world when it comes to using Facebook. And of course, this assumption is not particularly positive for what was once a great social network.
