While previewing the Android 14 presentation at Google I/A, Google took the opportunity to reveal a new feature for the next version of the operating system called Ultra HDR.. This guarantees photo quality with more gamut and sufficient colors, making images more vibrant and more lifelike.

According to Google during an event held last week, the company made it clear that all devices updated to Android 14 will have this option available on mobile. However, it will be necessary to check whether the device can still receive the new operating system, which is scheduled to launch in August this year.

Third-party app vendors will have to decide for themselves whether to support the technology or not. Given the features offered by Adobe, it’s likely that most popular apps will include Ultra HDR support. Forbes has revealed that Ultra HDR will be available through the Google Photos app.

According to Adobe, which has experience creating and storing gain maps in regular jpeg files, “improved images for viewing on high dynamic range (HDR) screens show more intense highlights and shadows with higher levels of detail, resulting in more realistic and impressive visual experience.”

The tool can display different tones on mobile phones

However, one of the issues raised by the company is the fact that an image that is processed with the app and Ultra HDR support will display differently on devices. This occurs as a result of the different types of tone mapping implemented by the software.

“There are a number of reasons, including the different capabilities of HDR monitors and different tone mapping methods implemented in software and platforms. Therefore, HDR content authors cannot control or predict how their images will be displayed in other applications,” says Adobe.
