Apple testing M3 chipset with 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He says a source sent him App Store developer logs showing the chip being used in an unannounced MacBook Pro running macOS 14.
There is speculation that Apple is testing a possible variant called the M3, specifically the entry-level M3 Pro that the company plans to use in the future. This release is expected to take place sometime next year.. The M3 line is expected to benefit from TSMC’s upcoming 3nm process.
He reports that the chip was seen in a configuration with 36 GB of RAM.
The transition from 5 nm to 3 nm is apparently the reason for the increase in the density of nuclei. The M1 Pro and M2 Pro feature octa- and 10-core processors, as well as 14- and 16-core GPUs, respectively. In other words, the M3 Pro is expected to have 50% more processor cores than its previous generation predecessor.
As Gurman mentioned, Apple decided to adopt a balanced distribution between high performance and efficient cores in the new chip. He reports that the chip was seen in a configuration with 36 GB of RAM. For reference, the M2 Pro has a starting configuration of 16GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to 32GB.
Of course, before Apple introduces the M3 Pro, the company must first release the M3 core chip. Even providing information about the possibility of an improved version of the chipset, he indicates that the more basic version will be released first, and this may happen later this year.
“I think the first Macs with M3 chips will be available later this year or early next year,” says Gurman. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to announce its much-discussed new Mac, the 15-inch MacBook Air, during WWDC 2023 next month.
