It was the first day of the political trial of the president of Ecuador.

On Tuesday, the first meeting of the political trial of the President of Ecuador took place, William Lassoa debate that lasted almost twelve hours and led to cross-blaming by members of the National Assembly.

Shortly after 10:00 am (local time), the session began in a congregation full of banners in favor of the president on the benches of members of the ruling party, and where an earlier resolution was read to hold an impeachment trial on corruption charges that, if proven, would result in Lasso’s dismissal.

Opposition MP spoke first Viviana Veloz, who charged Lasso and even questioned his claims about his health, according to the Ecuadorian newspaper Primicias.

Before Lasso arrives at the site, around 13:00 (local time)dozens of supporters greeted him at the gates with cries of “death on the cross”.a formula giving the head of state the option to dissolve the Assembly if he considers that certain criteria are met, such as in the event of a “serious political crisis”.

The President spoke for about 50 minutes, in which he denied all accusations of which he is accused, and undermined the credibility of the evidence presented by the opposition, assuring that they resort to “delusions” because “they have nothing against them.”

“The political can never be an excuse for the illegal. Is it possible to commit a crime in the name of politics? Politics can never be the destruction of democratic institutions,” he strongly criticized, referring to the absence, in his opinion, of a legal basis for litigation.

After an hour’s break and the opposition’s subsequent reply, the president had the right to reply again, although he left the room and consequently began a debate in which 39 of the congregation members present intervened and it ended around 22:00 (local time).

The session will resume this Wednesday morning when the interference of politicians from all sides will continue attend the Assembly.

According to parliamentary sources, a total of about 70 MPs have registered, each with ten minutes to speak, so the debate is still expected to take time and possibly the final vote on a vote of no confidence in the president will take place next Saturday.

If they manage to reach majority with 92 votes in favor of 137 legislators, Lasso will lose his post, although there is no need to call new elections as Vice President Alfredo Borrero will take office before his term expires in 2025.

The opposition accuses Lasso of known and permitted the crime of embezzlement in a contract signed by the state company Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (Flopec) and the private firm Amazonas Tanker, which would have caused damage to the state by about $6 million.
