Google has announced that starting in December 2023, it will begin deleting accounts that have been inactive for at least two years.

This was reported by Ukrinform, citing the company’s press release.

As highlighted, this innovation is related to the company’s intention to protect user data, as the account will most likely be hacked if it has not been used for a long time.

This is because forgotten or unmoderated accounts don’t usually update or reuse passwords that may have been compromised and that don’t have two-factor authentication set up, so the account goes through fewer security checks.

The company’s internal analysis shows that abandoned accounts are at least 10 times less likely to set up two-step verification than active accounts. This means that these accounts are often vulnerable, and once an account is compromised, it can be used for everything from identity theft to forwarding malicious content such as spam or even spam.

“To mitigate this risk, we are updating our policy regarding inactive Google accounts for up to 2 years across all of our products. From late this year, if a Google Account has not been used or logged in for at least 2 years, Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar), We may delete the account and its content, including content from YouTube and Google Photos”.

The policy only applies to personal Google Accounts and does not affect accounts of organizations such as schools or businesses.

It is said that the company will start deleting inactive accounts from December. Google will send multiple alerts to users and will progressively block accounts.

“The easiest way to keep your Google Account active is to log in at least every 2 years,” the company added.

To register your account, you must sign in to your Google Account, read your email, watch a video, or do something else.

As reported by Ukrinform, Google is adding two new functions to search for fake and artificially generated images to reduce disinformation against the background of the development of artificial intelligence services.
