Montana Governor Greg Gianforte has signed into law a law banning the Chinese company TikTok from operating in the province to protect residents from possible Chinese intelligence gathering.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.

Montana will ban Google and Apple app stores from offering TikTok in the state, but will not impose any penalties on people who use the app. The ban will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

TikTok previously issued a statement stating that the new law “violates the First Amendment rights of Montanans by illegally banning TikTok,” and said it will “continue to work to protect the rights of users in Montana and beyond.”

The administration of the app, which is owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance, did not comment on whether government officials plan to file lawsuits in connection with the decision.

TikTok, which has more than 150 million US users, has faced calls from US lawmakers and officials to ban the app nationwide amid concerns over the Chinese government’s potential impact on the platform.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Chinese company TikTok has promised to increase the number of security functions and expand fact-checking measures to combat disinformation on the social network, especially in relation to the Russia-Ukraine war.
