iPhone: microLED display is Apple’s bet to reduce reliance on Samsung

Apple invests in research and development of microLED screen technology to reduce its reliance on Samsung, which is currently in charge of making screens for the Cupertino-based company. This technology has been used as a better alternative to the most used ones today such as OLED and miniLED.

The Nikkei reported this Thursday (18) that Apple’s idea is to be able to use these microLED screens on the iPhone. to no longer depend on Samsung Display. The first production equipment has already been developed by Apple, which is also partnering with LG Display to help them develop and manufacture the technology.

MicroLED can illuminate each pixel independently, thus delivering the deep blacks and high contrast that are hallmarks of OLED. However, unlike OLED, its composition is not organic, which eliminates issues such as burn-in.

In addition, panels tend to be thinner and use less energy. The reduced size of micro-LED chips can enable monitors to better integrate with other sensors, such as high-precision under-screen fingerprint readers, among other benefits.

First screens may appear in 2 years

Given that the display is typically the highest single cost component of an iPhone, there are huge opportunities for cost savings and potential profit margins if Apple can master its own display technology rather than relying on Apple’s intellectual property. must be done to protect OLED panels for iPhone.

However, the portal highlights the difficulties and challenges that microLED screen manufacturing can present. This is because this Apple technology is still in its first prototype stage, so it will take a few more years for it to appear on devices.

Previous reports suggest that Apple wants to deliver microLED screens for the Apple Watch by 2025. To speed up this process, the Cupertino-based company now has microLED research centers in the US, Taiwan and Japan.
