Last Wednesday (17) during the annual product event Uber announced the release of a new feature that will allow teenagers aged 13 to 17 to independently use the company’s transport services. Previously, people under the age of 18 could not use Uber without an adult.

A new feature called “Accounts for Teens” will be available starting May 22 in more than a dozen metropolitan areas in the US and Canada, including cities such as New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston. The company also plans to expand availability to other cities in the coming weeks and months.

With this new option, teens will be able to book a ride and be in the car without an adult present. However, parents and guardians will be able to monitor them remotely through the app, thus ensuring the safety and peace of mind of families.

To keep teenagers safe, Uber has implemented a number of features. Each teen account will have a unique PIN that must be provided to the driver prior to the start of the trip. In addition, the application will be an audio recording of the race. Parents will also be able to track the progress of their trip using the real-time tracking feature in the Uber app, as well as be able to directly contact the driver during the trip or contact Uber support.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stressed that only experienced drivers with high ratings will be allowed to ride with teenagers. He stated that the initiative aims to help families cope with the daily rush and strengthen the company’s commitment to keeping users safe.

In addition, Uber also announced that it is launching a national phone number in the United States, 1-833-USE-UBER (1-833-873-8237), which allows people without an app to use the service. The measure is primarily aimed at helping older people who may be unfamiliar with smartphone technology.

Uber has posted solid growth over the past few quarters, outpacing the downturn that has hit much of the tech sector in recent months. In addition, the company, which diversified its services to include food delivery before the pandemic, has recovered better than its main U.S. competitor, Lyft.
