Ecuadorian court dismisses lawsuits against Lasso’s “crucifixion”

Ecuador’s constitutional court on Thursday dismissed a series of lawsuits filed by opposition politicians to block President Guillermo Lasso’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly, paving the way for early parliamentary and presidential elections.

Members of the opposition parties, along with public organizations, filed six separate lawsuits in court demanding that Lasso’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly by decree be declared unconstitutional.

“As a result of the decision to reject the claims of unconstitutionality, requests to the Court to take precautionary measures to temporarily suspend the challenged ruling were also rejected,” the statement said.

Lasso called for the so-called “crucifixion” on Wednesdaya measure enshrined in the Constitution that allows the president to call early elections for both his office and the assembly under certain circumstances, even if the actions of the Legislative Assembly block the work of the government.

The leader cited a serious political crisis and internal unrest in Ecuador as reasons for the move.

Earlier Thursday, Ecuador’s electoral court said early elections could take place on August 20. If there is a second round of presidential elections, it could take place on October 15.

After the decision of the Constitutional Court, the electoral court approved the start of the electoral process, and its chairman, Diana Atamant, said that now no one can interfere with the elections.

Lasso has faced an impeachment attempt by opposition politicians over allegations that he ignored warnings about embezzlement related to a contract with state-owned oil transportation company Flopec. He denied the accusations.

The President will remain in office and rule by decree until the election of his successor and a new legislature in accordance with the Constitution of Ecuador.

Before the decision of the Constitutional Court, deputies of the dissolved National Assembly said they would respect the court’s decision even if it supported the president’s actions.

Those who are elected in early elections will only hold office until the next elections are held in 2025.
