An internal Apple note states that employees are not allowed to use ChatGPT for work. At the same time, the earlier ChatGPT was made available on iOS in the form of a free official program.
The Wall Street Journal saw a document in which the company expressed concerns about these AI platforms collecting sensitive data from employees. In addition to ChatGPT, Apple has also banned its employees from using Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. With Copilot, developers can automate coding.
ChatGPT, also supported by Microsoft, sends data to developers so they can continue to develop the artificial intelligence models the platform uses. As The Wall Street Journal noted, a bug in March allowed users to view the chat history of other ChatGPT users. After this event, ChatGPT added an option that allows users to turn off their chat history and disable training the AI model.
If Apple engineers use these platforms, there is no guarantee that the information entered, including codes, will not reach anyone else. The same is true for other sensitive information, for example employees can use ChatGPT to write emails.
JPMorgan Chase and Verizon have also restricted the use of such platforms. Amazon asked its engineers to use its own internal AI tool instead of a third-party. The Wall Street Journal adds that Apple is working on its own AI model.
