What you do yourself, you do better. It’s an adagio, which is also written on a tile somewhere in Meta’s offices. The American company will produce its own AI chip for the first time. It will be called MTIA, which stands for Meta-training and inference accelerator.
The new chip is said to be more powerful and efficient than traditional CPUs and is tailored to Meta’s internal workloads. According to CEO Santosh Janardhan, this in combination with GPUs should ensure better performance, faster data processing and more efficiency.
Don’t expect MTIA to be available in all meta things out of the box, the process is still in development. The new chip is not expected until 2025.
Alongside the new AI chip, Meta is also working on a next-generation data center, a model fully optimized for generative artificial intelligence. This new design should not only work faster, but also be cheaper to build.
In addition, Meta is also developing a new ASIC dedicated to video transcoding. It was baptized MSVP: the Metascalable video processor. This chip is specifically designed to support both video-on-demand transcoding and live stream data transfer and processing time. In the future, the MSVP will also provide content about AI as well as content specifically for AR and VR, all targeting different meta-apps.
These announcements fit into the larger picture of AI at Meta, as does the recent launch of an AI model that identifies objects in images and videos. Or the transition to open source for his Animated Drawings program.
