A 2.2 magnitude micro-earthquake hit New York and New Jersey on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to local reports, the movement was recorded at 2 a.m. and was felt in northwest Yonkers, along the Hudson River in New York, and also in New Jersey.

CNN network interviewed Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist at the National Geological Survey Information Center, noted that they received about 200 alerts from people who sensed movement.

Most of these reporters were from people within a 25 km radius of the earthquake’s epicenter, Baldwin said. “It’s pretty common, you can have a few quakes in a month, a few quakes in random places,” he added.

The Yonkers Fire Department confirmed they received emergency calls, but most of them were caused by noise caused by the earthquake, with no major damage or injury. An alleged burnt out transformer was also reported.

According to geologist Baldwin, earthquakes in the northeastern United States, as noted by CNN, are especially “difficult to predict” and are likely to occur by chance.

“Fault lines are usually not detected, they are underground and just happen,” he said.

Last semester, the Geological Survey reported almost 100 “small” earthquakes in the northeastern United States, on the border with Canada.
