Zelensky “hoisted” Lulu at the G7 summit

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he did not meet with Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Japan because The Ukrainian leader was not present at the planned meeting between them.

At a press conference regarding his participation in the G7 summit, where he attended as a guest, Lula said that Zelensky did not arrive at the scheduled time for a scheduled meeting between the two.

He noted that while he was waiting for the Ukrainian president, he postponed the meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Phum Minh Chin, but after this meeting, which lasted an hour, Zelensky didn’t show up either.

Lula admitted he was “disappointed” that the conversation with Zelensky could not take place, but downplayed the disagreement, saying that if it didn’t work out now, it would happen “another time.”

The Brazilian ruler reiterated his condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and insisted on his firm defense of the need for peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, although he regretted that neither of them was willing to do so at the present time.

He recalled that two weeks ago, Lula’s chief international adviser, former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, came to Kiev, who, after negotiations with high-ranking Ukrainian officials, confirmed that there were no conditions for peace at the moment.

“At the moment, both are convinced that they will win the war. (…) Neither Putin nor Zelensky think about the world. And if there is no talk about peace, then the war can be very long,” he said.

Lula said countries in the global South not involved in the war, including Brazil, India, Indonesia and China, “want peace,” but recalled that only belligerents have the right to choose possible mediators.

“I don’t fight to be an intermediary. The (mediator) should be a person with whom both parties agree,” he added.
