The previous deadline of May 26 has now been extended to August 26. Another extension in the future is not excluded.

Broadcom’s takeover of VMware is beginning to resemble the move to Echternach. European authorities, the UK and the US have yet to decide on approval. The UK is targeting a late August deadline, while Europe is targeting mid-July. The US is reviewing its options and has no specific date in mind.

The previous deadline of May 26th was therefore extended to August 26th. Another extension looks strong to us as Broadcom’s fiscal year ends Oct. 31. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan has often mentioned in interviews that he would like to close the deal before the end of the fiscal year.

Whether that will work is not certain. European authorities noted back in April that a Broadcom acquisition of VMware could be damaging in the long term. The same antitrust concerns are being raised by the UK, which also requires additional investigative time there.

Overall, this means that the end of the takeover saga is far from in sight. It has been almost a year since Broadcom announced the acquisition: On May 26, 2022, both parties reached an agreement. At the time, Broadcom thought it could wrap up the final paperwork by early 2023, but the acquisition has been stuck ever since.
