The skin arouses curiosity not only because it is smooth and flexible, but also because it is able to produce nerve signals that connect directly to the brain. Previous attempts to create such skin required extremely inflexible electronics to translate tactile sensations and other nerve impulses.

However, responsible scientists have succeeded not only in converting sensations such as pressure or temperature into electrical signals, but also succeeded in using an extremely thin and flexible material that can be applied to almost any surface.

The developed new form of the skin gave remarkable results in the course of research conducted by the scientist. Zhengan Bao, chief researcher, says tactile reproduction was not the biggest problem they faced.



The biggest challenge was the implementation in a leather-like material.

In his statement, Bao said the biggest hurdle is the lack of mechanisms that mimic the sensory abilities of human touch. For him, the problem would be to put all these components together, using only materials similar to human skin.

“A lot of that challenge came down to developing skin-like electronic materials so that they could be incorporated into integrated circuits with enough complexity to generate neural pulse trains and low enough operating voltage for safe use in the human body,” he said. . The structure of the skin consists of technological layers, including a flexible integrated circuit that mimics the sensory receptors present in human skin. This circuit operates efficiently at extremely low voltage, requiring only five volts to operate properly.
