Bolivia: priest confesses to more than 80 abuses in newspaper and launches investigation

Bolivian authorities are investigating abuses in the church after the diary of a deceased Jesuit priest came to light in which he confessed to sexually abusing at least 84 minors since the 1970s, prompting a search for justice in the country.

“Hopefully the investigation will end soon, be serious and deep,” Monsignor Ricardo Centellas, Vice President of the Bolivian Episcopal Conference (CEB), said Friday, adding that the Church is ready to cooperate with any investigation.

“Let’s wait for the results to know what crimes and that the perpetrators should receive an appropriate sentence,” he said.

Over the past week, various educational institutions, including the San Calixto Traditional School and the Provincial Curia Company of Jesus they were raided by the prosecutor’s office, which was looking for documents for the preliminary investigation. Two priests were arrested.

Activist America Maceda said it was important to hold both individuals and institutions accountable.

“We demand justice for the victimsbut not only for those who perform the action, but also for those who systematically hide these actions institutionally,” said Maceda of the Feminismo Comunitario organization.
