Dell Technologies proposes a major upgrade from Apex. Many other solutions and services will soon be available as part of the hardware specialist’s as-a-service model.
Dell Technologies extends Apex with a number of new solutions. Dell Apex is the manufacturer’s answer to HPE GreenLake. Like GreenLake, Apex is an attempt by an established hardware manufacturer to bring the convenience of the cloud to on-premises operations. Apex customers can purchase storage, compute, and other services on private hardware located in the basement or in a colocation data center, but in a monthly payment service model. Dell is thus assuming the role of a cloud provider in its own country.
Competitor HPE took first place with GreenLake, and Dell wants to compensate for that by offering the widest range. To this end, Michael Dell is presenting a handful of innovations today. Dell Apex Compute is the first. Under this banner, organizations can purchase bare metal servers from Dell as part of the Apex model. You can order the servers through the Apex console and pay on a subscription basis. Since Apex is of course not a real cloud, you have to reckon with several weeks between the order and the availability of the computing power.
Customers have the choice of installing the servers themselves or opting for a full-service model in which Dell (or a partner) also handles the installation and configuration. For those who want to run workloads on them, the servers are available with Nvidia GPUs.
Dell is also expanding the available storage solutions. It has to be, as HPE recently deployed extensive block and file storage solutions within GreenLake. Unsurprisingly, Dell announces Apex block storage At. This offer gives you a cloud version of the storage software that Dell integrates with its on-premises systems. For example, Apex lets you manage block storage on Dell hardware as well as AWS and Azure within the same software environment.
Apex file storage is the same but for file storage. The OneFS software will initially be available from AWS. The third novelty is the Dell Apex Navigator for multicloud storage. This allows you to manage both file storage and block storage clusters from a central console. Apex Navigator for Kubernetes brings similar simplicity to Kubernetes environments.
With the introduction of hybrid cloud, the hybrid cloud continues to gain in importance Dell Apex Cloud Platform for Microsoft Azure, Red Hat OpenShift and VMware. The cloud platform offering allows you to build an on-premises extension of your cloud hardware in Apex. Think Azure Arc but with a Dell logo on the box.
Dell Apex Cloud Platform for Microsoft Azure is exactly that. The OpenShift and VMware solutions offer a similar extension of the cloud environment in their respective contexts. According to Dell, a consistent experience is the big advantage here.
Finally Dell Apex PC-as-a-Service still remarkable. This solution does what the name suggests: As part of the PCaaS offer, companies purchase PCs with flexible terms of one to five years. The computers are not purchased in advance, you pay a subscription fee. All Dell devices are available within the solution.
According to Dell, the benefits include better support, less onboarding effort, and better troubleshooting. When something is wrong with a device, it’s simply up to Dell to fix the problem. In addition, large companies can provide their employees with up-to-date hardware at predictable costs without the classic cycle of large investments being written off.

Dell is clearly staying true to Apex. The big hardware farmers see all the advantages in models where customers can order hardware more easily and without large initial investments. Due to its size, Dell has a major advantage over its main competitor HPE GreenLake: The wide range of endpoints makes Apex a one-stop shop. Since the separation of HPE and HP, the server manufacturer no longer has any computers in its portfolio and cannot offer this all-in-one solution.
