You can now sign in to Google without a password. However, you need to enable this functionality not only through the settings, but also on the different devices you use.
After Microsoft, Google also swears by the password. You can now sign in to your Google account without a password. This happens with so-called master keyTechnology that uses alternative means to verify your identity. Typically, this alternative is a form of biometrics, where your device’s operating system verifies your identity and then gives Google the green light, after which your login attempt is approved.
Enabling Passkey authentication isn’t that difficult, but it can be a little cumbersome if you use different devices. On an Android phone, everything comes naturally, but on a Windows PC, you have to duplicate a bit. But don’t be fooled: everything is done in a few minutes and you can say goodbye to your password.

Activate passkeys
First go to the settings of your Google account via this link. There you can activate Passkey authentication at the push of a button. You will need your password for this. Passkeys are automatically activated on all your Android devices where you are signed in with your Google account. From now on you can log in here with your fingerprint.

Sign in on another device
What if you don’t want to use a password but want to use a passkey to log into a new device? This works too: Your Google account sign-in window gives you the option to sign in using another device. Ideally, this is your smartphone. A QR code will appear at the top of your browser window. You have to scan it with your phone, after which Google will try to connect the device. This worked mostly smoothly in our tests, but not always. After the link, you can confirm your identity on your smartphone, after which Google will log you into the computer.
As a backup solution, passwords will remain in place for the time being. If the Passkey option doesn’t work, you can always fall back to it. This is handy because we already had to use this option when our smartphone didn’t want to pair using the QR code.
By activating Passkeys now, you can already familiarize yourself with the system, which is theoretically much more secure than passwords. Over time, you can remove your password so hackers can no longer use it. At Microsoft this is even possible today.
