After completing a major series of updates, Microsoft is making free licenses for Windows 11 virtual machines available. Last year, developers were able to get started with a Windows 11 VM over a two-month test period in July and November. Now another test phase begins for them.
The Windows 11 Development Environment (WDE) includes the latest Windows 11 update (Version 2305) and provides access to the Windows 11 Enterprise SKU (Build 22621.1702). The operating system comes with these tools:
You need at least 24 GB of free disk space to download the VM. You can use the environment without activation, you don’t need to buy a license key. Anyone (developer or tester) can use the license for free until August 9th. After this date, your desktop will turn black and you will be warned that you need to activate the Windows 11 version.
You can download the latest Windows 11 virtual machine from Windows Developer Center.
