Samsung introduces Knox Matrix as the next frontier in device security

Samsung Knox Matrix is a new security platform with which the South Korean giant wants to take the security of all its devices to another level, through a comprehensive approach that protects the entire ecosystem.

The ‘Knox’ security platform has done its job the first ten years since 2013 it has been presented at the MWC in Barcelona. Since then, it has received several improvements, from the hardware security zone “TrustZone” to the additional layer of security provided by the “Vault”. Now to celebrate comes the announcement of a major update “Samsung’s Vision for a Safer Future”.

Samsung KnoxMatrix

The last name “Matrix” is starting to know Samsung’s vision of the future in the cyber security section. The general idea is which connected devices in the ecosystem they can protect each other and their users.

The company expects 14,000 million connected devices. This number continues to grow as more users and more devices are added, from a simple cup of coffee. That’s obvious more devices generate more risksbecause every single device can have security issues that can be exploited by criminals.

While individual protections for a single device are and will continue to be a necessary part of security, Samsung believes that this form of protection is not enough to keep up. Exploitation of devices in the ecosystem may lead to attacks on other client- or company-owned devices.

Knox Matrix creates a trusted network that all devices that support it connect to private blockchain that “allows compatible devices to check each other for intrusions and ensure security with intelligent threat monitoring”.

If a device on the network is successfully attacked, Know Matrix immediately isolates the device so that it cannot be used to attack others in the same ecosystem. And further, as the company ensures that security will be strengthened the more devices a user connects to this trusted network, which includes three basic properties:

  • Chain of trust. The devices will monitor all other devices on the trusted network for threats.
  • Credential synchronization. Protecting users when moving between devices.
  • Cross Platform SDK. It will allow devices on multiple platforms to connect to the Knox Matrix “with consistent safety standards”. It is currently limited to Android, Tizen and Windows, but may be expanded.

Samsung admits this development is a challenge due to the number of different types of products, operating systems and security standards. The company plans to notify users “potentially dangerous situation”it specifically mentions using old firmware.

Samsung KnoxMatrix will be released in 2024 on the Galaxy phones and tablets the company launches, but the plan is to extend it to all the devices it sells, including its smart home appliances. An interesting project, but it remains to be seen how it will be implemented, as it is very ambitious.
