If we were to think that Microsoft has already shown all its cards when it comes to artificial intelligence, Windows Copilot has shown that this is not the casethat in fact they were still holding back an even more revolutionary step than the integration of artificial intelligence into Bing and Microsoft 365. Now it is fair to say that this step was very difficult, if not unthinkable, if not so much an experience as acclimating to the concept that the Redmond chatbot provided
Microsoft Build 2023 kicked off today, Microsoft’s annual event for developers, a meeting that doesn’t usually grab as many headlines as the recent Google I/O or Apple’s already very close WWDC, but which aims to reverse that trend this year. for the Redmonds had decided so it is time to significantly expand the integration of artificial intelligence again (thereby amortizing its enormous financial investment in OpenAI) in its extensive catalog of products and services.
The most significant news for the consumer market is, as I mentioned at the beginning, the leap from an AI-based assistant to an operating system with Windows Copilot, an assistant that will be integrated into Windows and will be in charge of providing quick access and automatically performing certain actions. And of course, as you might have guessed, it will also integrate the features of the new Bing, providing centralized access to features, apps and information, a proposition that, at least at first glance, sounds very enticing.
Windows Copilot integration in Windows 11 uses a familiar format, the bar that appears on the right side of the desktop when we want to open it, for which we will have to click on the taskbar button. Upon opening, Microsoft claims: “Windows Copilot remains consistent across all your apps, programs, and windows, always available as your personal assistant.«, a statement that prompts us to think that its integration with the operating system and applications should be quite high.
The interesting aspect is that Windows Copilot will be able to make adjustments to system settings, a type of operation that many non-technical users prefer to avoid. If this is resolved to make it as simple as it should be, we could be in for a huge improvement in the experience of using Windows 11, although I understand that there will be other users for whom the Assistant’s ability to get to the “guts” of the operating system they will seem a little disturbing.
Windows Copilot comes to fill the gap left by Cortana, Microsoft’s voice assistant, which, unlike Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa, has failed to gain a significant share of users. Thus, the absence of a virtual assistant in the Redmond operating system contrasted with its presence in both macOS and mobile operating systems. Now, with this move, the company is not only catching up with its main competitors, but may even be ahead of them, giving a new impetus to the already very turbulent field of AI integration.
And when can we try it? The truth is that Windows Copilot will not take long to reach users as expected its first preview version for Windows 11 for the month of June.
