Ever since Adobe started talking about Firefly, a lot we were waiting for its implementation in Photoshop. However, as we already told you more than a month ago, the company preferred to make its debut with Premiere Pro, another of the company’s reference applications, and with features that, as I said, seem to be really successful. , and I’m sure they mean before and after in the work of editing and post-production of audiovisual content.

However, Photoshop is Adobe’s main flag, an application that has managed to become an absolute reference in its field and one of those applications that is known even by many people who have never used a computer, or have done so sporadically and for very specific purposes. So if these new generative features were already a giant leap forward in Premiere Pro, one would expect its leap into Photoshop to be something of a note as well. And we weren’t wrong in thinking that.

Now we’ll see all the new things that are added to Photoshop, but before I begin, I can’t help but focus on Generative Fill. The rest of the improvements are also very interesting and will certainly make a difference to the users of this application, but this feature in particular seems to me a perfect example of how generative models can be used not as a source of content (whatever type it is), but as a tool to complement the previous creation.

Until now, when we talk about generative image models, a blank canvas immediately comes to mindand call text with a description and of course an image created by AI. Not without reason, some call it the democratization of artistic creation, because it is enough that we are able to imagine something (and express it in language). call, of course) to get it with its pluses and minuses. Now the question is how useful it is for designers and professional photographers. It’s true that they can use these AIs to make suggestions, look for inspiration, etc., but that’s just a small step forward.

Adobe changed that completely with Firefly Generative fill, which is a feature that we can consider an evolution (a super-evolution, to measure it correctly) of “Content-Aware Fill”, which was already a great example of the use of artificial intelligence in the context of image creation and editing. And so, if the smart fulfillment feature was already able to generate content based on the context, this new generative fill tool will be able to do this by combining context and prompts, which allows both adding and editing elements already present in the image, as well as expanding its size. As you can see, the result speaks for itself and is a great example of how generative models can make a big difference (and with advancements like this, they surely will) for photography, design and editing professionals. .

Also, in case you were wondering, all fixes and new content are applied to separate layers, so that the creative process is not destructive to the original image. In other words, we will be able to perform as many tests as we wish, and after the tests, if we wish, we will only have to delete the layers created by Photoshop’s AI to remain with the original.

If Generative Fill uses artificial intelligence to edit and add content to images, Remove is the perfect complement as it allows us to remove elements from them and replace them based on context, an improvement on what Content-Aware Fill already offers which I mentioned earlier. Adobe thus replicates in Photoshop one of the features that Google Photos users appreciate the most, the Magic Eraser.

According to Adobe, these are ideal scenarios for using this new tool:

With the new presets feature, Photoshop provides automatic and intelligent image editing with a set of presets that we can apply to them with just a click of the mouse. Including 32 presets and to check its appearance just hover over its preview. By selecting any of them, Photoshop will automatically create all the adjustment layers (which we can later adjust if we wish) to get the desired result.

In addition to these news, closely related to AI, Adobe also announced two improvements to Photoshop, which will undoubtedly mean a big advance for its users. They are the following:

  • Contextual main panel: Each workflow is typically associated with the use of certain tools and features, and in response, Photoshop has long enabled the creation of personalized workspaces, an improvement over using a standard interface. Now, with this new taskbar, it’s even better because its content, as you might have imagined, automatically adapts to the type of task you’re doing to offer you the tools that are most often used in that context.
  • Transition improvements: Anyone who has used Photoshop’s Transitions tool knows that it’s very complete… and very unfriendly. Those who have never used it will hardly understand it, but those who work with it on a regular basis will surely be thrilled that thanks to this deep modification it now offers on-screen controls and live preview. If there isn’t a football game on while you’re reading this message and you hear someone shouting their joy to the four winds, it’s probably a designer who just read this.

As you can see, Adobe Firefly landing in Photoshop marks the before and after use of generative artificial intelligence for professionals design and editing, as it will allow them to focus on the most creative tasks, leaving the most boring ones to be solved immediately by AI.
